In the recent policy address, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam set out her administration’s broad policy direction for the coming years. These cover areas that vital in the near term and in the long term, including housing, care for the elderly and economic development and innovation. In what ways do these aims represent new approaches compared with the past? What challenges will the government face as it works to achieve these ambitious goals? And what sort of future vision does this lead to?

Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBS JP is a Hong Kong politician and businessman, the incumbent Non-official Convenor of the Executive Council.

Mr. Chan is currently President of Asia Financial Holdings Ltd. and Asia InsuranceCompany Ltd. He is the Chairperson of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, Chairman of the Steering Committee on Restored Landfill Revitalisation Funding Scheme and Chairman of the Committee on Reduction of Salt and Sugar in Food. He is also a Hong Kong Deputy to the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China. He previously served as a Legislative Council Member as well as Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University, the Council for Sustainable Development, the Antiquities Advisory Board, the Advisory Committee on Revitalisation of Historic Buildings and the Standing Committee on Judicial Salaries and Conditions of Service. Mr. Chan was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2006.
